Last week I had the pleasure of seeing a live performance by the self-proclaimedthe best answering service for the job King of  Sales, Jeffrey Gitomer, during his visit  to the city of Philadelphia.  The funny thing is, he didn’t seem to spend a lot of time talking about sales, and even laughed at several of the tactics people currently use in their sales processes. One of his main messages was that times have changed, and those who continue to use the sales rules and tactics of yesterday will not succeed.

So what did he talk about?  Although he did not refer to it as such, much of his speech focused on in-bound marketing.  He learned long before most companies did that being a publisher of great content – and distributing that content in many different forms and channels (i.e. social media) was the new model for marketing.  People don’t want to be “sold”, but they do want to buy.  Where do people go these days when they want to buy?  The Internet.  He stated his goal long ago was to be numbers 1-10 in Google searches when people searched for his area of expertise.  By providing a high value service and regularly publishing on-line content in various channels in relation to that service over several years, he is now recognized as a world-renowned sales and customer loyalty expert.

Answering the Call – Be Helpful, Be Genuine

Of course, being found is only part of the process.  Another of Jeffrey’s key themes was to be helpful.  He stated that having an automated company voice menu greeting with nine different choices is not at all helpful, especially to people who are trying to make a buying decision.  Jeffrey said he has used a quality live answering service for over 20 years, because when a prospect or a customer calls his office, he wants them to speak to a live person.  No matter where in the world he is, he gets a text message in regards to the call and can respond in a much quicker, more professional manner than if he had to rely on the old school method of dialing in to a voice-mail system to listen to his messages.  He said that to this day, people are still wowed by the personal experience they receive when they contact his company.

The presentation that I saw was part of Jeffrey’s tour promoting his new book, 21.5 Unbreakable Laws of Selling.  Although the book is sales related, the ‘laws’ that he states in his book are also very applicable as a formula to building a successful business entity.  Whether you are a business owner, manager or sales professional, this one is a great read, and, unlike other business books it is also fun.  If you are looking to grow your revenue, I would recommend this book.  And, if you are still not using a quality answering service, you are always welcome to give us a call!
